Mourning Big Momma

We have had a horse that has been really sick lately.  No, it’s not the same horse that bit me!  LOL!  This horse’s name is Big Momma, and she is Shelby’s horse.  She has been the most gentle horse we have ever had.  Over the past few months, she has been getting thinner and thinner.  We’ve consulted with vets and feed stores, trying to buy special foods to fatten her up.  Also, we wormed her a couple of extra times, just in case that was the problem.  However, 3 days ago, my daughter went out to feed her and found her laying down.  We tried and tried to get her up.  We knew it wasn’t colic because we could hear her tummy rumbling.  We called the vet, and since it was midnight when we found this problem and it was below freezing, he said to cover her with blankets to keep her warm, worm her again, and check her in the morning.  So, we did that.  The next morning, we found her on the other side of the stall, and there was fresh poop in the stall…. so she had obviously been up at some point.  We thought that was a good sign.  We covered her back up, and brought her food, which she at with no problem.  She was very alert…just laying down.  We called the vet again, and he came out to the house for a farm call.  He said that she had a stomach and intestinal infection that was really bad.  He said that even if he gave her IV antibiotics and vitamins, he thought there was less than a 10% chance that she would survive, and he suggested putting her down.  It was such a hard decision to make…. but just watching her trying to get up and being so weak was so sad.  So, yesterday, we buried Big Momma.  A very sad day…

Big Momma - RIP
